An Evolution in Atolla’s Predictive Models

Meg is the CEO and Co-founder of Atolla. She has a graduate degree in Engineering and Management from MIT, and previously worked in design roles at Patagonia, The MIT Design Lab, and Formlabs.



At Atolla, we’ve always focused our company on the intersection of data science and skin science. Over the last two years, we have been working towards the goal of building a predictive model for skin health that helps people prevent skin issues, in addition to treating them. In order to create this predictive model, we needed to collect continuous and diverse information about people’s skin, including their oil, moisture, and pH measurements over time. We are excited to announce that after 2 years of building our technology, our proprietary algorithms have reached an exciting milestone that makes it even easier for users to receive their first custom Atolla serum.

Before this change, we asked users to do an at-home Skin Health Kit in order to get their first custom serum. With the power of our predictive model, trained on hundreds of thousands of data points about users’ skin, we can now predict a user’s starter serum through an initial online assessment. This custom starter serum is shipped to users along with their first Skin Health Kit, which will further refine and fine-tune their formula for their upcoming serum.  

Instead of a single product purchase, we consider it a full multi-month journey: the Atolla Skin Health Plan. We believe this change will empower new users to head into their Atolla experience with the full knowledge and understanding of what their skin needs and what’s going into their formula, before they purchase a subscription. And with the introduction of the Skin Health Kit for each subsequent serum, they can bring in the real data testing that makes Atolla a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

When we started this company, our mission was to make healthy skin progress an accessible and easy experience for all. We’re so excited to continue developing and improving Atolla so more people can feel confident in taking ownership of their skin health.
