Skin Stories is a feature series written by Atolla members about their relationship with their skin.
If you had asked me 10 years ago about skincare I would have said, without hesitation, “What do you mean – washing your face with soap and water?” I went from knowing absolutely nothing about skin care to now having it as a huge part of my daily life and self care routine.
Growing up, I was lucky to have good skin with no issues. I’m originally from Albania, which has a perfectly balanced Mediterranean climate. In addition to great weather, I had access to local and fresh healthy food sources, which I definitely think helped my skin stay healthy.
Since I never really had to worry about breakouts or fluctuating between dry and oily skin, I didn’t have the knowledge or understanding about how to deal with any changes in my skin. At 16, I moved to the United States and things were wildly different. I didn’t expect that the differences in climate (like the humidity in Virginia), food, and my daily life would have an impact on my skin. I started having issues with breakouts and very oily skin. While I didn’t suffer from bad acne, the random breakouts bothered me since I didn’t know how to prevent them and wasn’t sure when they would pop up. I just kind of dealt with them as they came.

In college, I started architecture, which meant I had a lot of sleepless nights working in studio. It was extremely stressful and my nutrition was poor since it was mostly candy or quick snacks. My skin started becoming worse, and I realized I should probably start doing the basics like moisturizer and cleanser. I thought I had it all figured out since my skincare routine went from 0 to 2! Well.. I didn’t. Turns out, using random products from the drugstore didn’t do much for my skin.
I started thinking about skincare differently around 2 years ago. I was in my late twenties, and my older sister started diving deeper into her skincare. She would tell me about all the steps she was doing and the different active ingredients for each layer. I figured it was time for me to step up my routine and start investing in my skin. And by stepping it up, I really stepped it up. I went from 2 products to 10. I had no idea about all the potential negative interactions that could happen between productions and that the combinations of some of them wouldn’t give me the results I was looking for. I realized I spent so much time following all the steps in my routine every night, without results. It was at least 30-40 minutes every night, and it became so time consuming that I started slacking from being consistent.
My custom formula replaced the 4 different serums I had for different concerns. Right away, my skincare routine got simpler, but more targeted.
It wasn’t until I discovered Atolla that my skin and routine changed for the better. My custom formula replaced the 4 different serums I had for different concerns. Right away, my skincare routine got simpler, but more targeted. I also have a very active lifestyle with working out and traveling, so I like how my Atolla formula changes if I need it to.
I noticed a huge difference in my complexion, moisture levels, and fine lines. I never break out anymore despite the countless outside runs, long hours at the airport, and constant stress at work. I’m really looking forward to Atolla expanding their product line and helping my routine work even better for me. My skincare routine has never been easier or more impactful!
